Cathedral Music Ministry - Ministerio Musica Catedral:

Music in our Liturgy

The Church has a great and rich musical tradition that encompasses over a thousand years of repertoire. These wonderful treasures did not come into existence to showcase a “musical programme” or a “musical organization.” Rather, these treasures survived centuries of turmoil to point to their original creator – our Trinitarian God, who opened the lips of poets and composers, so that they may proclaim His glory.  As such, we, as heirs of this “trust” should always keep in mind that the reason of which we prepare these musical compositions with utmost diligence is to offer God the best of our labour.  When singing / playing these musical offerings we call upon all the saints who have written these compositions to pray with us in glorifying God the true Creator.  It was Him who created these compositions and created each of us to reproduce these compositions and continuously create each composition as we sing and play every note.  It is Him who turns our sounds into music, and through the power of Holy Spirit the words and music touch people’s minds and hearts to unfold His living Word.  In this way, our “noises” becomes a sacrament. Since some of these compositions are too complicated for assembly singing, the choir, the “unworthy and faithful servants”, would need to offer the highest form of artistic endeavour of which each individual is capable.  In this way, we don’t put up music as the idol before God, but open ourselves up to God’s creation and re-creation through the Holy Spirit in the Word and Sacraments.

Concert Series
The Bishops of the Second Vatican Council had pointed out that “the fine arts are considered to rank among the noblest activities of man’s genius.”  A concert series that highlight and promote local talent within the church and the artistic communities is a non-intrusive means for outreach and evangelization.  J. S. Bach is called “the fifth evangelist” because through his work, especially his sacred music (vocal or instrumental), God has reached people of all kinds.
